The Pozo de los Humos waterfall is located in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. It is an impressive waterfall formed by the River Uces as it flows towards the Duero (the mouth of the Duero is located about two kilometres below the waterfall). It is about 50 metres high, the same length as the famous Niagara Falls. It is true that waterfalls always attract our attention. Without knowing very well why, waterfalls have that little something that attracts us, and when it is as spectacular as this one, the feeling is much greater.
The best season to visit it is probably winter or autumn. In summer, this river can dry up. Before going to visit it, we advise you to look at the rainfall of the previous days, and to equip yourself adequately: walking shoes, comfortable and waterproof clothing.
How to get to Pozo de los Humos?
We were in a small hotel in Bermellar and we took the route that the GPS indicated to us. We drove along the national roads DSA 573 and SA-CV-51, until we reached a parking lot indicating the waterfall. From there, we have to walk.
The little hiking trail
At the beginning, the slope is steep and descending, but it decreases as we go along. This descent to the Pozo de los Humos is quite easy and fun. On the way back, a nice little challenge! A multitude of plants decorate the landscape and remind us that the climate of these canyons is above all Mediterranean: junipers, honeysuckle, olive trees, sumac, etc… The views from these granite cliffs are unbelievable. Despite the thousands of people who visit Pozo de los Humos every year, it is pleasant to see that there is practically no garbage on the way.
As we approach the Pozo de los Humos, we get a glimpse of what lies ahead: the sound of the fall is more and more perceptible. Vultures can also be seen flying high in the sky.
Pozo de los Humos Waterfall
Finally, we reach the waterfall where several points of view are placed. But one of them is simply exceptional: it is a platform that, suspended in the air, places us right in front of the waterfall.
When we arrived in front of the waterfall, we stayed without talking for a long time. All we had to do was be here and enjoy this magnificent spectacle offered by Mother Nature. We listened to the deafening noise, staring at the waterfall, staring into the wave... For a few minutes, we stood there, immersed, with an empty mind, breathing in the cool, humid air, the water rushing between the rocks and emitting a mist of sprayed water, halfway between steam and fine rain (hence the name "fumes").
This is the moment when we enjoy the most of this impressive waterfall in the Salamanca region.
Afterwards, we stayed for a while to walk around and marvel at the majestic mountain scenery. By the way, did you know that behind that mountain is Portugal?
